Wood Fencing Pros and Cons

A classic wood fence is as American as apple pie.

Wood fences are:

  • Great looking
  • Inexpensive
  • Easy to install and repair
  • A solid "green" choice since wood is a natural, renewable resource

The biggest drawback to a wood fence is that some types of wood fences will have to be re-painted or re-stained every few years.

If you choose high quality wood and take care of your fence, it can last up to 20 years. Make sure your posts are made of pressure treated wood, western red cedar, or steel for the best durability. Check with your local lumber yard or home improvement store to learn about what species of wood fence boards are available and widely used in your area.

"I like a man who can build things.  Whittle me something out of wood and I'm sold." — Rachel Bilson
